Vitrified vs Ceramic Tiles: Which Is Right for Your Home?
By Chopra Udyog · 04 Oct 2026 · 1 min read
Choosing tiles is one of the biggest decisions in any home renovation. The two most common options in India are vitrified tiles and ceramic tiles. Both look great, but they behave very differently.
What are ceramic tiles?
Ceramic tiles are made from natural clay fired at a moderate temperature and finished with a glaze. They are lighter, easier to cut and usually more affordable — ideal for walls, kitchen backsplashes and low-traffic areas.
What are vitrified tiles?
Vitrified tiles are made from clay mixed with silica and feldspar and fired at very high temperature. The result is a dense, glass-like tile with very low water absorption (below 0.5%). They are stronger and more stain-resistant, making them perfect for floors.
Quick comparison
| Feature | Ceramic | Vitrified |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Moderate | High |
| Water absorption | 3% or more | Below 0.5% |
| Best for | Walls, bathrooms walls, backsplash | Living room, bedroom & commercial floors |
| Price | Lower | Medium to premium |
Our recommendation
- Living & bedroom floors: Glazed vitrified (GVT) or PGVT tiles in 600x1200 mm or larger.
- Bathroom floors: Anti-skid matt tiles.
- Bathroom & kitchen walls: Ceramic wall tiles — light and easy to install.
