BWP vs MR Plywood: A Complete Buying Guide
By Chopra Udyog · 25 Sep 2026 · 1 min read
Plywood is the backbone of modern furniture. But walk into any shop and you will hear terms like MR, BWR and BWP. Here is what they mean.
MR (Moisture Resistant) plywood
Also called commercial plywood, MR grade is ideal for dry interior areas — wardrobes, bed frames, TV units and office furniture. It handles humidity but not direct water.
BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) plywood
A step up from MR, BWR plywood uses stronger resin and handles occasional water exposure better.
BWP (Boiling Water Proof) / Marine plywood
Made with phenol formaldehyde resin, BWP plywood can withstand continuous water contact. Use it for kitchen cabinets, under-sink units and bathroom vanities.
Which thickness?
- 18–19 mm: carcass, shelves, wardrobes, kitchen cabinets
- 12 mm: drawer sides, partitions
- 6 mm: back panels
Tips before you buy
- Check the IS mark (IS 303 for MR, IS 710 for marine).
- Ask for calibrated plywood for uniform thickness — it makes laminating easier.
- Buy from an authorised dealer to avoid fake brands.
