The skill behind every AI tool
A prompt is what you give an AI: your question, instructions, examples and any text or files. Prompt engineering is the skill of writing prompts that reliably get useful, accurate results. The same AI can give a weak answer or an excellent one — the difference is often the prompt.
How a language model reads your prompt
- Your text is split into tokens — small pieces of words (roughly ¾ of a word in English; Indian languages often use more tokens).
- The model has learned patterns from huge amounts of text. It predicts the most likely helpful next token, again and again, to build an answer.
- It only “knows” what is in its training and in the context — everything in the current chat: your instructions, earlier messages, files and search results.
What this means for you
| Fact about AI | So your prompt should… |
|---|---|
| It can’t read your mind | State the goal, audience and details |
| It follows patterns | Show examples of what you want |
| It predicts plausible text | Ask for sources and checks for facts |
| Context is limited | Keep important instructions clear; start a new chat for a new topic |
| Knowledge has a cut-off date | Use web search or give it current information |
Prompting works the same way across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and most AI tools — what you learn here transfers everywhere.
