What is AI?

Machines that learn

Learning objectives
  • Say in your own words what Artificial Intelligence means
  • Give three examples of machines that learn
  • Understand that AI is made by people

Hello, explorer! 👋

Artificial Intelligence — or AI — means teaching a computer to do clever things that usually need a human brain: understanding what you say, recognising a picture, or guessing what comes next.

"Artificial" means made by people. "Intelligence" means being able to learn and think. So AI is thinking power made by people.

Machines that learn

Your bicycle cannot learn. It does the same thing every time. But some computer programs get better with practice, just like you get better at cricket or drawing.

Normal machineMachine that learns (AI)
A fan — always spins the same wayA phone that unlocks when it sees your face
A calculator — 5 + 5 is always 10Google Maps learning which roads are crowded
A torch — on or offA voice assistant that understands "play a song"
Fun fact: AI is built by people — scientists, engineers and even school students! One day, you could build one too.

Is AI alive?

No. AI does not have feelings, it does not get hungry and it does not really "understand" like you do. It is a very smart tool — like a super-calculator for words and pictures.

Practical demonstration

Play "AI or Not AI?" with a parent or friend. Point at things at home and decide together:

  • Ceiling fan → Not AI (it never learns)
  • Phone camera that finds faces → AI
  • Washing machine timer → Not AI
  • YouTube suggesting videos you like → AI

Rule to remember: if it learns or guesses, it is probably AI.

Practice task

Draw a picture of a helpful AI robot you would like to build. Write two lines about what it would learn to do.
